C. Gladys Mitchell

Mitchell, C. Gladys Age 95, of Edina passed away peacefully May 27, 2019 surrounded by her children and pastor. She was preceded in death by her husband J. Gordon Mitchell in 1982, and her brothers Otto, George and Wilbur Van Roekel. Gladys was the valedictorian of her Orange City, Iowa High School class of 1941. She graduated from Nettleton Business College at age 18, took the civil service examination, and moved to Washington D.C. to work in the Pentagon. After WWII, Gladys moved to Minneapolis and held positions at Cargill and a law firm before marrying Gordon in 1952 and starting a family. She later returned to work at Home Insurance, which she enjoyed greatly and where she had many close friends, retiring at age 70. She enjoyed her involvement in Sigma Phi Gamma, a sorority for business-women. Gladys was an accomplished chef (she would call herself a "cook") and a warm hostess. She was particularly known for her exceptional desserts. Chocolate was a foundational ingredient in many family favorites, and she spoiled her family with a homemade pie every Sunday afternoon. She was an avid reader and enjoyed bridge. Gladys was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church for many years and an active senior member of Christ Presbyterian Church, enjoying Edynamoes, book club and the mid-month Chapel service. Gladys was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother and will be dearly missed by her children, Barb (Jim) Eppel and John (Quay) Mitchell and five grandchildren: Sarah (Brett) Garrett, Caitlin (Elliot) Schmidt, John (Emily) Eppel, Holly (Jonny) Bauman and Chloe Mitchell. She is also survived by her siblings, Rod (Eleanor) Van Roekel, Glenn (Audrey) Van Roekel, and Marla (Joe) Mooibroek and sister-in-law, Rosalie Van Roekel. Her family wishes to thank her pastor and friend, Reverend Jody Phenow and the wonderful staff at Presbyterian Homes of Bloomington for the excellent care and compassion shown to Gladys the past three months. A service to celebrate Gladys’ life will be held at Christ Presbyterian Church, 6901 Normandale Road, Edina, MN 55435 on Friday, June 7, 2019 at 10:30 AM. Church phone: 952-920-8515.
